Aces Jiu Jitsu Club Gives Back

Aces Jiu Jitsu Club Gives Back

At Aces Jiu Jitsu Club, there is often talk about giving back to the community and checking in for charity. Have you ever wondered what that really looks like? At Aces we do much more than talk about giving back, we actually do it.

Year round at Aces, there is a focus on making sure that we  IMPACT those around us.

For the second month in a row, the people at Aces Jiu-Jitsu Club (AJJC) have fed hundreds of homeless people in downtown Austin.

Head Coach Mikal Abdullah, is a big believer in the importance of community and helping those in need.  AJJC is more than just a place to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—it’s an ecosystem of people at all levels in their personal, professional, and athletic development. We support each other not just in our athletic challenges, but in every aspect of our of lives.

Here at Aces, the belief that our community isn’t limited to within the walls of our gym. It goes outside the gym, too! It travels beyond our walls towards the families of our members and to the city at large. What we do inside the gym is only a small portion of the IMPACT that happens when someone joins our community. At Aces, we believe that it is important to take our vision onto the mats and into the streets!

A few months ago, the leadership at Aces decided that we have some issues in our rapidly growing city. While we are training and practicing to sharpen our skills, there are people in our city with basic needs that are not being met. In that moment, a decision was made to act on what many had been feeling. Just talking about it and clicking “like” and “share” on Facebook wasn’t enough. (Although it is VERY helpful.) So Coach Mikal decided it was important for us to do something about it. And we did.

Starting in June of this year, AJJC has committed to dedicating a percentage of membership dues and food and drink sales every month to feeding our city’s homeless. We have also committed to give in other ways to people who need help. We want our community to know that we are doing more than working out. We want our city to feel IMPACTED by all of the Aces.

In July, we were able to feed 100 homeless Austinites, and last month we doubled that to more than 200. Our hopes are to increase that number again in September. We are hoping to continue that trend every month for the end of the year! The more we grow as Aces, the more that we can give back.

Partnering with us in this endeavor is the Roaring Fork, who have donated their kitchen and their AWESOME chef and Aces member, Adrian Giovanelli, to the cause. Each month, we take delicious meals to those in need in hopes of putting smile on their face.

This is more than just giving back to a handful of people. No matter how many receive a meal, the legacy that we want to leave is one of compassion.  Every one of Aces Jiu Jitsu Club members is HELPING to making our city a better place for every person in our community.

How many people get to say that while they’re training jiu-jitsu and improving their mental focus, confidence, and fun, they’re also making a direct impact on the lives and families lives of their neighbors? All the people at Aces, that’s how many.

Here at Aces, we have a unique community and an even more unique opportunity to make sure that every person that we encounter is impacted by their experience. We want to empower everyone to know that even the smallest gift can make a world of difference.

So, remember that when you buy a drink or a snack from our Pro Shop or Check in for Charity, you are going to make a difference in the lives of more people than  you can count.
