The title of this article is a nice way of highlighting how most self-defense classes fall horribly short. Another way of putting it is that these so called “self defense” classes can get people hurt or worse!
The problem is that when someone teaches techniques that flat out do not work anywhere except a controlled environment, they are creating a false sense of security for the person taking their class. That person feels armed and protected by the self-defense knowledge they just learned. However, 99% of the techniques I’ve seen taught by people who label themselves “Self Defense Experts” would never work in a real life scenario.
Check out this video. This is an outstanding example of the horrible information floating around the internet and being taught by people who quite frankly have no idea what they are talking about.
Sure, this video is horribly scripted and full of bad acting, but let’s focus on the technique. As a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu coach and athlete, what is taught in this video would NEVER work. Running down the list of issues I have with this “technique” (I use that term loosely) would take far too long. Trust me. This won’t work and in some cases doing what you see in this video could possibly result in you hurting yourself instead of the attacker.
So, what should someone do who is looking to learn some practical self-defense? Start with a proven self defense system. For hundreds and hundreds of years, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been helping smaller, weaker people use leverage and techniques to neutralize larger opponents. These same techniques that allowed a 160lbs Royce Gracie to defeat a 285lbs Dan Severn at UFC 4 can be found at many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) schools throughout your city.
Aces Jiu Jitsu Club even offers a Women’s Self Defense Program that utilizes BJJ techniques and shows how to apply them in a real world scenario.
